Every ride, every time

Helmets.

We require them of our volunteers.

Some of us grew up wearing one. Our moms had the "no helmet, no ride" rule and it stuck with us into adulthood. Some of us started wearing one when we became parents, or when we got that young, green horse and stopped feeling quite so invincible.

We realize accidents happen, and while we can live with a broken ankle or a pulled muscle, broken brains take a long time to heal - IF they can. TBI's and concussions are preventable with a helmet.

Now, let's look at this particular helmet. Upon initial inspection, one would say, that looks close to brand new. It's clearly never been in a fall; there are no outward cracks or dents or discolorations.

However, when you turn it over and check out the manufacturer's tag (and again - the interior says "wow, this is in really good shape") -- this helmet is TWENTY FIVE YEARS OLD.

That's a big nope on wearing it to protect your noggin.

The manufacturer's recommendations for riding helmets is replacement after 5 years (or after an impact fall).

Why replace after 5 years? Because materials degrade and therefore may not offer as much protection with the passing of time. For those of us who might store our helmets in our (hot) cars or wear our helmets several hours a day -- those are other indications to replace more often.

* Helmets may not PREVENT all concussions but they do reduce the severity.

* Do NOT buy an "expired" helmet and expect the same protection you would get from a new helmet.

Ride smart - ride safe. And wear your helmet!
