Safe Harbor Standardbreds is a 100% volunteer-run, foster-farm based equine rescue organization based in Middle Tennessee. Funded primarily by private donations from people like you, we complete full assessments of animals and provide training when needed to help ensure a lifetime home. We are passionate about horses, educating our communities, and making sure our animals find the right people.

Founded in 2013 as Safe Harbor Equine and Livestock Sanctuary, the organization was at the time, the only option in our area for both horses and livestock animals. Today, we are focused on retraining and re-homing off the track Standardbreds and community outreach programs to improve the welfare of horses and their humans in our region.

Animals in our organization are never subject to time limits or age limits.

 Sanctuary Residents

These horses will live out their lives in our care, due to health or behavioral traits that deem them ‘unadoptable’ to the typical owner.

Each sanctuary resident is available for sponsorship at a donation of $150 per month, which helps us cover their basic care needs.

If you think you see neglected animals:

Under Tennessee law, nonprofits like Safe Harbor cannot directly seize animals and hold owners accountable for their condition. Rather, we work with law enforcement and private individuals to resolve these sad and difficult situations, often whether or not charges are filed or legal holds are necessary.

Some guidance is outlined here. Diligent follow-up is often necessary.
